While the Internet has helped society to grow in many different ways, there are some things that a book can still do better than a computer screen. That's one of the reasons why people shouldn't forget about all of the great things that their public library can offer them. Whether you're learning English as a second language or looking for an entertaining and cheap place to take the kids for a few hours on the weekend, the public library is still one of Yonkers, and several other American cities, best assets.
With most jobs today we spend literally hours a day staring at a computer screen. Some people are managing gold mutual funds while others are writing up their final research papers. If you're someone who enjoys reading as a way to relax at the end of the day that you probably don't want to continue in front of that light. A public library not only offers you access to thousands of books that you can borrow for free (as long as you bring them back on time) but also several reading spaces where you can forget about the rest of the day and get lost in a book.
There are currently thousands of people online trying to research a paper for school or looking for information for a project at work. While it may seem like every bit of information you could ever want to know is inside of your computer, it might not actually be all that easy to find it from credible sources. There are experts at your local library that have degrees in finding everything from a book on how strapping machines are made to the latest real estate statistics for your area. Sometimes they will send you home with a book and other times they will just be helping you navigate through their Internet resources.
While the primary purpose of a library might be to hold books, that is no longer the only thing that you can do there. The Yonkers Public Library hosts programs and events for people of all ages. If you're working in a shop that repairs used woodworking machines while you're learning English as a new resident of America you could participate in the English Conversation Group. Or young children can come in the morning for Mother Goose Time.
There are three library locations in the City of Yonkers and each has their own opportunities. The Riverfront Library has meeting rooms and an auditorium and Grinton I. Will is the home of the Fine Arts Department. Crestwood is the smallest branch but has volumes of several popular books and editions that can teach you everything from basic science to how to install an on demand hot water heater in your home.
